Alan Morse Davis “Pygmy Polyphonics (Protracted)

Released by the netlabel At Sea as the It Is Glorious to Make Electricity for Socialism collection.

« Here’s a collection of the best bits of my musical blog in 2009. Tracks 1, 3 and 4 are composed to some degree (although 3 is just mixing and processing three different sources), 2 and 5 are merely processed.

1/ is based on a boat trip that I took from Venice to its airport, bongos replacing outboard motors.  2/ is a slowed down field recording of pygmies.  3/ is two different recordings of the same British folk song with the added spice of some backwards Indonesian folk song.  4/ is a homage to an Icelandic composer, but using the storyline of a 1970s Dr. Who serial.  5/ is the infamous suicide song written by Hungarian composer Rezső Seress, performed by Paul Whiteman and Johnny Hauser in 1936, I just slowed it down for added gloom.

For the tracks that are only processed, the only skill that I have used is imagination, taste and technology. I feel slightly apologetic about that, but if you could see all the music from the same process that I have discarded I believe that you might judge me more favourably.

Track 1 had a sonic issue with mains hum, you’d only hear it if you had good speakers, it’s corrected as at 11pm HK time (GMT+8) on 4th March. — Alan Morse Davies »

[in]anace “Caught Association” Mix

An [in]anace mix of ambient, electronica, experimental and glitch netlabel audio combined with guitar, field recordings and voice.

Runtime 1h 9m 46s

« It’s the time of the year which suits best for slow tones, nearness and emotions. This mix presents a beautiful collection of warm and gentle electronic soundscapes including a good portion of clicks’n’cuts that are taking their turns together with spherical space flights.

Specialties of this set are the analogue and natural parts like guitar plays, field recordings and interesting voices. They are going along with rhythmic and seducing movements, mysterious and deep. Theatrical music for the special hours and desires. — [in]anace »

“Acoustical Illusions” Mix on Ambientblog.net

A part of the Hum in the Room Trilogy of mixes

Runtime 59m 12s

“Acoustical Illusions,” a part of the “Hum in the Room Trilogy” (2005), is dedicated to the environmental sounds that sound like distant choirs or orchestras.  Sometimes when you listen to sounds in your environmental background, they may vaguely sound like a full string orchestra, or like soft whispering voices.
An orchestra tuning?  Cars passing on the highway?  Sound that sound different from what they really are — Acoustical Illusions.  Like the other two mixes in this set “Mantra of Walls and Wiring” and “The Hum in the Room,” this is a very minimal, drone-oriented mix.  And probably, you’ll also hear some sounds that aren’t even in it!

Counterspark “7:36”  From the Resting Bell...

Counterspark “7:36”

From the Resting Bell netlabel release, The Halpern Experiment

« Counterspark is the solo project of Johnny Utterback of Richmond, Virginia.  A visual artist by trade, Johnny began experimenting in sound in 2006. From that point on, Counterspark has been a project of experimentation in the world electronic music.  Rich textures and lush soundscapes with an underlying tone of optimism are all intertwined into the melancholy compositions that are Counterspark.

The sounds of The Halpern Experiment were sourced from a “healing sounds” cassette, found in a thrift store amongst the piles of one hit wonders.  Not finding any value in the cassette’s listening experience, the tape was cut into loops and abstracted.  With the focus on the textural elements of the tape and relationships of the melodies, the project became a healing method in itself.  Providing refuge from reality in a swirling world of analog colour and warmth, The Halpern Experiment was two years in the making.

With mastering by Tanner Menard, the eight movements truly come to life. — Resting Bell »

Jeph Jerman & Tanner Menard “The Now of Sound”

From the Archaic Horizon netlabel release, The Now of Sound

« Jeph Jerman and Tanner Menard both have a unique notion to the world of sound. When meeting in the desserts of Arizona, Tanner discovered the unique philosophies that drive Jeph in his ecological recordings. Jeph in his disinterest in contextualizing sound has found that “music” is merely listening to all sonic vibrations. Sound is to be experienced wholly and not isolated by categories. The removal of formal knowledge of music opens up the listener’s ability to hear, experience and enjoy all vibrations.

‘The Now of Sound’ was created from a synthesis of synthetic bells written in supercollider by Tanner, and desert recordings from Jeph. This amalgamation was then projected with homemade equipment by Jeph onto to the resonant portion of a gong. The resulting frequencies were recorded with a contact mic then post processed with basic computer effects.

While ‘The Now of Sound’ is in actuality music because of the artistic decisions to alter the sonics by Tanner, the work still pays homage to the sonic philosophies matured by Jeph. Described by Tanner, ‘The Now of Sound’ is a “meditational work that exists in the sonic stratosphere, the highest and most imaginary harmonics where real ‘music’ takes place.” With his primary interest in consciousness, Tanner suggests the listener use ‘The Now of Sound’ to tune their listening environment to include external, and internal vibrations of their sonic surroundings. — ah026 release page »

Eurasia “The End of the Winter”

From the MiMi Records netlabel release, Glooming in the Twilight

« Akira, the fictitious name behind Eurasia. didn`t make us wait longer than one season (autumn-winter) to listening to the melodies and the ambience of a rural Japan.

Glooming in the Twilight maintains the delicacy of its predecessor and adds some charge more sentimental and melancholy. Sadness, yes. In this Glooming in the Twilight the field-recordings are less (or nothing) noticeable and the piano grabs all the attention from beginning to end. Joy, too.

“The End of the Winter” brings the electronic and post-rock in one hand, the other loads the environment and the classic tune that fills the sound and features of Eurasia .. Twilight, completely. — MiMi »

Ian Hawgood creates music with an effortless flow and intelligent, minimalist programming aesthetic that lends itself to the art of the movie soundtrack. With each piece contained in Soundtrack To A Film In My Head Which Will Never Get Made, Ian constructs a visual picture in the mind, making use of everything from moaning violins to ethereal, synthesized drones. Adrian Newton “A14” From the Open Source Audio...

Adrian Newton “A14”

From the Open Source Audio collection, Village Soundings

Runtime 30m 04s

« Soundscape compositions, originally made for Resonance FM and broadcast in 2002. The pieces explore the sound environment of the community in which I lived at the time, and it relationship to the people that lived there. The first piece focuses on the sound of traffic, which is an inescapable feature of the sound environment in the area. It is a sound that annoyed me intensely, so I decided to find out whether other people living locally shared my view, by interviewing people living close to the busiest road in the area, the A14. I was surprised to discover while making these recordings that beneath the sound of traffic, the sound of birdsong is equally omnipresent. The second piece is compiled from sounds recorded at Reach village fair, which is one of the oldest such events in England. I was interested to examine which elements of this rich soundscape could be used to characterise ot define this small community, in contrast to those sounds that have invaded from elsewhere, as a product of global culture.

The following two pieces were similarly compiled from sound recordings made in the villages of Girton, Histon and Impington (Cambridgeshire) during June 2002. The first of these features recordings made at a number of events held in celebration of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. I thought that these events might reveal something about my local community, and that I might be able to capture this by documenting the soundscape that they produced. For me the most memorable sound is of Ethel playing an electronic organ, which she did for the entire duration of our local street party, and can be heard here around the middle of the piece. The final piece is compiled from sounds recorded at one specific Jubilee event, a ‘community stroll’. This was designed to encourage local residents to explore the history of their community, by providing them with a guided trail. The event was very popular and throughout the piece you can hear comments made by people as they walked from one local landmark to another. Near the end you can hear the sound of a father simulating the sound of a car engine, while pushing his child’s buggy. — Adrian Newton »
